Arba Minch University Senate promoted Dr. Tesfaye Habtemariam Gezahegn, an assistant professor and researcher in the Department of English Language and Literature, to an Associate Professorship Academic Rank on September 20, 2022. Click here for Pictures.

To get promoted to this academic rank, any lecturer and researcher must fulfill the necessary requirements of effective teaching, research publication, community service, and active engagement in institutional affairs in accordance with the AMU Senate Legislation Article 56/4 and MoSHE directive of academic promotion, AR01/2020.  The Senate approved Dr. Tesfaye’s credentials which were endorsed by the Staff Development, Promotion and Partnership Senate Standing Committee (SDPSC) as sufficient to promote him to Associate Professor.

Dr. Tesfaye Habtemariam, who was born in 1974 in North Shewa Zone, completed his primary and junior secondary education at Sia-Debir and Deneba primary and junior secondary schools, respectively. He also attended his secondary education at Enewary High School. He had a two-year Diploma in English Language Teaching from Bahir Dar University in 1995. He received his Bachelor's degree from Dilla University in December 2002 and he earned his Master of Education Degree from the College of St. Mark and St. John, UK in Trainer Development - English Language Teaching in 2006. He also received his PhD in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from Addis Ababa University in 2016. 

Dr. Tesfaye started his professional career as an English teacher at Fasha Junior Secondary School and taught the same at Konso High School until November 14, 2003, then moved to Arba Minch Teacher Education College and worked as Teacher Trainer from 15 November 2003 to 11 October 2008. 

Joining Arba Minch University on October 12, 2008, he has been working as an English Language teacher in the Department of English Language and Literature, College of Social Sciences and Humanities. He has lectured Spoken English, Advanced Speech, and Communicative English courses to undergraduate students and Computer Assisted Language Teaching, English Language Teaching Methods, Quantitative Research Methods, and Issues in Teacher Education courses for postgraduate students.

With regard to shouldering institutional responsibilities and holding positions, Dr. Tesfaye has been a coordinator of the Teacher Development Program from Nov 20, 2006 to Oct 11, 2008; a coordinator of the General Education Quality Improvement Program from Nov.26, 2009 to Oct 20, 2011, a director of Institutional Quality Assurance Directorate (IQA) from Nov. 2016 to June 10, 2020, and from June 11, 2020, he is the Executive Director of Research of Arba Minch University.  

Dr, Tesfaye has authored and co-authored a number of research outputs. Some of these include “Mobile Technology for English Language Classrooms: Students’ and Trainee Teachers’ Reflective Views of Cell Phones for English Language Learning and Teaching” in 2019, “EFL Supervisors Written Feedback Focus and Language Functions: A Mixed Methods Study” in 2021, “Effects of Information Communication Technology-Assisted Teaching Training on English Language Teachers’ Pedagogical Knowledge and English Language Proficiency” in 2022, “The Effect of the Mobile-Based Lesson Approach on the Attitude and Performance of EFL Teacher Trainees’ Aural Skills” in 2022, and “Mobile-based aural oral skill lessons: The effects on EFL teacher trainees’ oral performance ” in 2022,   among others.    

Dr. Tesfaye earned different certificates for his participation, being a speaker and a trainer, in different trainings, Symposia, Expos, and national, continental, and international conferences.
