Arba Minch University - Ethiopia

e-Learning endeavours

Due to present shortages in Internet capacity, no course materials and other e-learning facilities are offered via Internet outside the University. AMU does conduct a distance learning project, carried out in the town of Sodo, 120 kms away, but e-material is not being used there.

On Arba Minch's campus a number of e-learning facilities have been put in place:

  • AMU is pleased to host a local Mirror Site for Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Open Courseware,
  • Following the Widernet Initiative by the University of Ohio, and eGranary Server is hosted also,
  • An extensive Digital Library makes study material available on-line for students, who can use the many computer labs for accessing these
  • A pilot with Moodle is to start soon.
As one of the outcomes of the Business Process Re-engineering effort of second half 2008, a number of pilots with e-learning was agreed and will run during first half of 2009.

Arba Minch University is a fast growing University in South-West Ethiopia. It is targeted to develop from 8,000 registered students in 2008 to 24,000 students in 2014. Whereas the University provided mainly Bachelor-level education until 2008, an extensive program of Masters studies is being implemented now.
