Institute of Technology’s Architecture and Urban Planning Department has graduated its 9th batch of 37 architects in a colourful ceremony held at New Hall, Main Campus on 3rd March, 2018. Addis Ababa University’s Water Resource Development Institute Director, Dr Geremew Sahile was the guest of honour and Architect, Zerai Mesfin, a delegate of Ethiopian Association of Architects was special invitee. Of 37 pass-outs, 8 were female and 29 male architects. Beimnet Kassaye Beyene with CGPA 3.71 outwitting all bagged the top honor; Eyoel Tesfaye Gurmu, 3.36, and Mintesnot Kassahun Kerete, 3.30, were the second and third respectively. Firezer Nigussie with CGPA 3.12 was adjudged best among female graduates.

University President, Dr Damtew Darza, in opening remarks, said, university is keenly keeping tabs on almost all-around developments right from academic to infrastructural arena. While being adhered to the national policy for development, we are churning out professionals in all sectors and strongly supporting female, physically-challenged and needy students for their all-round progress.

Calling upon Architects, he further said, having passed the course is just the beginning because now you will truly enter into the field where you have to prove yourselves. It’s time to conduct and perform to the best of your ability that will decide your professional fate, he added.

AMU Board member and Addis Ababa University’s Water Resource Development Institute’s Director, Dr Geremew Sahile, gracing the event, said, education has always been instrumental in alleviating poverty and improve life; and for the same our government is giving much attention to higher education by allocating hefty budget outlay so that quality rule the roost. This will make nation’s economic development sustainable and enable to become the middle-income nation.

He further said use your talents and energy for the improvement of people’s lot; be ethical in approach and believe in teamwork. However, it’s just the beginning while serving people, you will learn a lot because in reality you will have to walk extra miles before you take rest.

Architect, Mr Zerai Mesfin exhorting graduates, said, said, the true way to success is hard work, tomorrow, when you step out, never seek to gain without doing enough; go to serve where you are needed most, not where you gain most. Therefore, believe in yourselves and your dreams; strive hard, hence it will place you before ample opportunities; if you rightly exploit them, God will make you what you aspire to be; so, be committed and world will be yours.

IoT Scientific Director, Dr Alemayehu Chufamo, introducing graduates, said, It’s our privilege to unroll this 9th batch of 37 Architects who, I am assured will excel in their respective work places and make their alma mater proud.

Dr Damtew Darza, Dr Geremew Sahile, Architect Zerai Mesfin and Dr Yechale Kebede distributed degrees to the pass-outs. Beimnet Kassaye and Firezer Nigussie were given special honor for their achievements.

At the outset, Gamo Gofa Cultural Music Band set the tone for the day by belting out popular ethnic numbers. Corporate Communication Directorate Director, Mr Fissiha Bekele, anchoring the program also gave the lowdown about AMU.
