Arba Minch University’s Water Technology Institute will be hosting 18th International symposium on ‘Sustainable Water Resource Development’ at New Hall, Main Campus from 8th to 9th June, 2018. It will have 22 research papers and six poster presentations from across the globe.

AWTI Scientific Director, Dr Abdella Kemal, who will be welcoming the gathering, informed that three ministers of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia will be gracing this prestigious event. It includes Cabinet Minister for Water, Irrigation and Electricity, Dr Sileshi Bekele, State Minister for Irrigation, Dr Abriha Adugna and State Minister for Water Supply & Sanitation, Dr Negash Wagesho, who is also AMU Board Chairman; University President, Dr Damtew Darza, will open the symposium.

It’s learnt that this 18th edition of symposium is expecting participation from 10 universities and 7 different research institutions from across globe, it includes presentation from two international scholars i.e. Dr Luke O Olang of Munich University, who will be presenting on ‘Regional initiative on drought monitoring for Horns of Africa’ and Dr Gebrehawaria Gebreigziabher of International Water Management Institute will speak on ‘Viability of investment in solar, irrigation, evidence from experimental data in Ethiopia’.

The first day will have 10 paper presentations focusing on issues like hydrology & integrated water resource development and small-scale hydro & alternative energy sources; while on the second day remaining papers will revolve around irrigation & drainage, water supply, sanitations & emerging challenges.

Vice President for Research and Community Service, Dr Simon Shibru, will deliver valedictory speech; scholars, researchers, AMU community, patrons, stakeholders and others will be in attendance.
