Arba Minch University’s sport persons putting up improved performance in the recently held 8th Public Universities Sport Festival at Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) have won six gold, seven silver and six bronze.

AMU team in male chess lifted the team cup and four gold medals. Betelihem Dechasa got individual gold in female Taekwondo and Yemisirach Wondimagen a bronze; while Rebunesh Bekele pocketed two silver in Athletics (100-m run) and high-jump.
In gymnastic, this time AMU presented spirited show as its team could bag 3 bronze in Group Gymnastic (Amadun Ahmed, Mikiyas and Minyamir Dinberu); Minyamir Dinberu got a silver and Amaduden Ahmed settled with a bronze in their individual performances.
Despite their splendid performance, AMU’s basket-ball teams (male and female) couldn’t surpass their opponent in the final hurdle, had to settle for silver each.
Unlike in the 7th Sport festival held at Haramaya University, AMU’s physically-challenged players have again displayed stellar performance. It was double delight for Yetemwork Habtamu who bagged one gold in shot-put (4.5 meter) and silver in wheel-chair run (400-m).
Similarly, Sewyemihon Yesigat in javelin throw (24.66 m) snatched silver and a bronze in long-jump (4.84 m).
The 8th Public Universities Sport Festival concluded on February 15, 2015 in the presence of President of Oromiya Regional State, His Excellency Mr Muktar Kedir, Minister of Education, Dr Kaba, Minister of Science and Technology, W/ro Demitu Hambisa, Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, Mr Alemayehu Tegenu, Federal Sport Commission Commissioner, Mr Abdisa Yadeta and universities’ presidents, vice presidents and others.
President of Oromiya Regional State, His Excellency Mr Muktar Kedir in his closing remark congratulated all participants for completing the sport festival peacefully.
