Dr Feleke was speaking in a Graduation ceremony for 96 Graduates including 35 graduates of Medical Science and 61 of Architecture and Urban Planning at new auditorium, Main Campus on March 14, 2015.
Arba Minch Town Zonal Administrator, Tilahun Kebede, AMU Board Chairman, Mr Tagesse Chafo, Prof Zinabu Gebremariam, AMU top officials and near and dears of graduating students attended the program.
Architecture and Urban Planning’s three graduates who topped the table with impressive CGPA are: Mikias Solomon Assefa, 3.86, Kidus Tekalign Yirsaw, 3.58, and Tigist Marboch Tewongi scored 3.50. The overall third top-scoring graduate Tigist from Institute of Technology was adjudged first amongst female students, followed by Rodes Wondater Feyish, 3.44, and Eyerusalem Taddese Melese with 3.19 came third.
Temesgen Meles Reda, who notched up 3.81 GPA, was the first amongst the graduates of Medical Science from College of Medicine and Health Sciences, followed by Zemede Geleta Eshetu, 3.41, and Hailegebreal Kebede Yeheyis came third with 3.40. Temesgen was awarded gold medal for his outstanding achievement.
Education Minister, Mr Shiferaw Shingute gracing the event, said, ‘‘Ethiopia has made great stride in medical science, from mere 3 schools of medicine to 28 at present, and from 100 students decade ago to 3000 in this academic year is an achievement in itself. Government might have faced several problems in facilitating things for you, but, now it’s time to prove your mettle.’’
Dr Feleke further said, ‘‘AMU has already achieved Ethiopian Government’s 70-30 ratio for higher education. The happiness of producing first batch of Medical Science graduates has overshadowed the challenges we faced. Now you have greater responsibility to shoulder, so be committed to usher in sustainable development in the country.’’
The ceremony got off with captivating performance by Gamo Gofa Cultural Band; even AMU Community School children congratulated the graduates in their own ways. The important sidelight of the event was Minister got the motherly peck from one of the graduates’ mother.
Corporate Communication Directorate’s Director, Mr Fissha Bekele and university Registrar Dr Belete Yilma steered the program. Deans of Institute of Technology, and College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Dr Negash Wagesho and Mr Behailu Merkios, introduced their respective graduates.
The graduates were also administered an oath to adhered to ethical behavior and serve the nation. Education Minister, Dr Feleke, and Dr Agena distributed degrees to the graduates of Medical Science.
