Arba Minch University’s 28th Convocation conducted in the tastefully decorated Auditorium at Abaya Campus on 27th June 2015, has many firsts. Of this year’s 4400 graduates, 4287 were under and 113 post-graduates from 36 different streams. Of total pass-outs, 65% alone were from engineering streams while remaining 35% constituted other subjects.Click here to see the Pictures.

This graduation was unique in a way as 22 Law students from College of Social Science and Humanities and 45 from Information Technology, Institute of Technology, graduated for the first time since the establishment of these two departments.
Dr Feleke Woldeyes addressing the gathering said, AMU has been producing skilled manpower for country’s development. And increasing profiles of the university has made us all the more responsible. Therefore, graduates are expected to fill the gaps of skilled professionals in various sectors and shoulder the responsibility with sense of accountability.
Cautioning further he said, ‘‘Now it’s time to be vigilant and sensitive when you step into the professional arena because there you will be judged by what you have learnt. Your diligence in understanding the needs and acumen to fulfill them will decide your fate.’’
The guest of honour Prof Afework Kassu Gizaw, Director General of Higher Education Research and Academic Affairs at Federal Ministry of Education, on the occasion, said with the first Transformation Plan nearing completion and second to begin, country has multi-purpose strategy in place to get rid of poverty, wherein graduates has key role to play.
Graduates instead of expecting jobs from the government should become an entrepreneur and create employment for others, he said and urged them to develop innovative knowledge and assimilate advanced technologies to contribute in the development of the nation. He hailed AMU’s contribution in problem-solving research and community services.
Last three years data including 2015-16, shows AMU has been experiencing upward trend in students graduating every year. This year AMU has registered the substantial rise of 36% in UG and 74% in PG categories compared to last year’s 3230 under and 65 post-graduates. In 2013-14 (2005 EC), university had churned out 2732 under and 37 post-graduates. This year’s 113 post-graduates were given degrees by the dignitaries on the podium.

With 2765 graduates, Institute of Technology has again scored the brownie points over other colleges. Last year it had 1508 graduates, while in 2013-14, the figure was just 604.


This academic year, College of Natural Sciences has 419 graduates, College of Medicine and Health Sciences 111, College of Agricultural Sciences 267, College of Business and Economics 386 and College of Social Science and Humanities 338.
In all 36 graduates from the University were adjudged top-scorers in UG category; six with the highest CGPAs awarded gold medals. Terekegn Tumebo Kariba of Midwifery department with 3.99 CGPA who topped the table lifted the overall winner’s Cup.
Beyene Senedu Yebrie, 3.93, Meteorology and Hydrology, Mohammad Aman Hussein of Plant Science and Abreham Agumasia Ayechew from Law, scored 3.92 each, Tegegenwork Temis Damte, Civil Engineering, 3.87, and Melaku Balew Teferra, Management, 3.81 are other gold medalists.
Among six outstanding female graduates, Fanaye Seyoum Chefike, Biology, with 3.90 was adjudged best also bagged three special prizes. Selamawit Gebeyehu Tiruneh, Public Health, 3.81, Hirut Samuel Tesfa, Horticulture, 3.75, Samrawit Dereje Tena, Water Supply and Environmental Engineering, 3.67, Addis Teshome Asamenew, Economics, 3.61, and Mahlet Zenebe Woldeyohanes, Amharic, 3.61 were given special prizes.


Gamo Gofa cultural band charged up the atmosphere with their lilting cultural melodies set the tone for the day as new graduates were all agog to receive their degrees.
Initially, School of Graduates Studies’ Director, Dr Anto Arkato introduced his graduates to the audience followed by Institute of Technology’s Scientific Director and other deans of the five colleges also informed the gathering about the numbers of graduates passing this year. Dr Feleke, Dr Yechale and Prof Afework distributed degrees to some of the outstanding graduates. Registrar, Dr Belete Yilma, read out this year’s academic record of the university to the audience.
Gamo Gofa Zone Administrator, Mr Tilahun Kebede, speaker of Gamo Gofa Zone People’s Council, Mr Shambel Shagne, other dignitaries along with graduates’ relatives, friends and guests graced the function. Corporate Communication Directorate Director, Mr Fissiha Bekele, conducted the program.
