AMU Research

Research Direction
The direction of research is guided by the following principles:
  • Excellence as measured by international standards
  • Relevance to the customers demand
  • Provision of an intellectually stimulating environment
Research Profile
The emphasis placed by AMU over the years has been predominantly "basic" or "fundamental" research. However, yet not, such works have resulted in very creditable publication records in reputable journals.

The University has now recognized the importance of institutionalizing the research process so that it can bring radical and fundamental changes up on its research performance and standings. As part of this study, the AMU has revisited its vision and mission and research strategy. Whilst striving to attain and maintain its’ excellence in research and disseminations, the University is now committed to broadening the scope of its research to encompass applied research and developmental work, through working in close partnership with industries and community to bring about direct benefit to the society. Hence of the total research efforts devoted by the university, 75% shall go for Applied, Multidisciplinary and Participatory while 25% shall go for Basic and Fundamental research categories.

Research Strategic Plans
The building block that comprises AMU's strategic plan is the attainment of excellence in both Applied and Basic research through:
  • forming research institute to facilitate research initiations
  • recruitment of research staffs and set conducive working environment
  • invigorating, complementing and broadening the existing expertise
  • promoting interdisciplinary and participatory researches
  • building an international reputation in the dissemination of results
  • establishment of strategic collaboration with other Universities elsewhere
  • establishment of strategic partnership with industries (AMU-Industry linkage)
  • development of strong links with internationally renowned research institutions
Research Capacity Enhancement
Bringing radical change on the research performance and standings is a key component of the newly designed research view. A new post for RD process owner, assistant process owner, Editorial team, and Project formulation, execution, monitoring and evaluation team has been created to drive RD enhancement plans. AMU has to make additional investments in support of its business process reengineering in RD, including appointing a number of senior researchers and investing on new infrastructures. Commitment to increase the number of research staff across the University and the involvement of staff in research is essential. The existing 25% research load is improved to 75% research load for senior academic staff with rank of at least assistant professor. The lengthy bureaucratic chain get its end here in setting a mechanism whereby every researcher is privileged and empowered to administer resources within his/her boundaries. This will boost the number of researchers in manifold and the research performance and standings as well. Over time, AMU aim to increase research capacity still further by recruiting higher caliber researchers and provision of trainings.
