School of Graduate Studies (SGS)
Background information
Back in 2002, the then Arba Minch Water Technology Institute first launched several MSc programs, and thereby founded the School of Graduate Studies.
The School was initially established to run two specialized programs: Hydraulic and Hydropower Engineering, and Irrigation Engineering.
Later additions were Hydrology and Water Resources Management, Meteorology Science, and Water Supply and Environmental Engineering.
In view of having a multidisciplinary approach for the public problems in the nation, the
school has launched additional MSc programmes under different faculties in March, 2009.

Admission particulars
- Self-sponsored applicants are only considered on vacant places as the placement is to be made by Ministry of Education.
- The minimum GPA required for admission is 2.0 out of 4.0 and above.
- The total course fee at present for local students is 26,500.00 Birr (250 Birr per credit hour for a total of 43 credit hours plus supervision and field trip fee).
In addition the candidates also require a minimum support expenditure of 1000.00 Birr per month plus accomodation allowances.

- For foreigners, the total tuition fee (including thesis production and supervision) payable to the University until the completion the study is USD 3500.
In addition a candidate requires a minimum support expenditure of 400 USD per month. The fee structure may be revised at a later date.
- In principle there is no scholarship available from the University.
Candidates admitted will have to find their own source of funding for payment of the Institute’s fee as well as for monthly support.
However, highly deserving candidates sponsored by Government organizations can be given a tuition waiver.
- Some accommodation is likely to be available in the campus. The candidates can apply for vacant accommodations if available.
However, foreigners will be accommodated in the campus unless they wish to stay outside the University campus.
- Good Library, Laboratory, class room and modern computer facilities with useful software are available.
- The course is being conducted in a nice manner by local and expatriate staff.
- Ethiopians and Nile Basin students are encouraged to apply.
