Dr Yechal was addressing the gathering at Lecture Theater, Main Campus as Arba Minch University celebrated 4th ‘White Ribbon Day,’ to reiterate the resolve to create an inclusive and accommodative society where women and girls can live without fear and intimidation; where violence has no place.

‘White Ribbon Day,’ is the ‘International Day for the elimination of violence against women,’ which United Nation, has recognized 25th November as the official day. ‘White Ribbon’ is a symbol of hope for a world where women and girls can live free from the fear of violence.
It symbolizes the commitment and responsibility on the part of civil society to challenge the acceptability of violence by involving men, helping women to break the silence, and encouraging everyone to come together to build a better world for all.
The program was organized by the Gender Affairs Directorate at Lecture Theatre, Main Campus on December 9, 2014. It was attended by AMU officials, staff members, girl students and female staff in particular.
The program began with Gender Affairs Directorate Director, Munit, calling upon men folks to unite against the nefarious practice of intimidating and oppressing women. She informed the gathering about the subtle forms of violence and its manifestations.
She also appreciated AMU police force for their proactive efforts in tackling the cases of violence against female students. Law Department Head, Mr Dereje Mammo, in his informative presentation on ‘Women’s rights with regard to global and Ethiopian context,’ enlightened the gathering about many seen and unseen aspects.
Dr Damtew in his closing remarks, called upon people to create more responsible society where women can live without any barriers, where girl child would have no fear of whatsoever. He said the society that provides equal opportunities to their female folks are the progressive one.
