To carry out second phase of infrastructural development at Sawla Campus, AMU has inked agreement with two Addis Ababa-based firms – Bright Construction and United Construction at Senate Hall on 5th July, 2016. The project will incur over ETB 133 Millions and is expected to be completed in one year’s time frame. Click here to see the pictures.

President, Dr Damtew Darza, chairing the meeting said, ‘‘This infrastructural development at Sawla Campus will facilitate smooth functioning of its academic activities.’’ He specifically asked the contractors to strictly adhere to the time frame stipulated in the agreement because in the past university had bitter experience with some of their ilk not completing the contracts in time which had adversely affected teaching-learning process.’’

He further revealed under next budgetary provision, AMU is expected to expand Students’ Clinic to serve growing students’ population in better way at Main Campus; government has approved its budget. Similarly, classrooms at Institute of Technology and Abaya Campus while additional library and offices for staff members will be built at Chamo Campus,’’ he added.

Bright Construction will build a cafeteria, a three-storey library and site works that include internal access roads, sewerage, sanitary and electrical utility facilities. It will incur over ETB 96 Million to the exchequer in one year, which may start soon.

United Construction will construct a three-storey classroom building, two-storey laboratory and laundry; it will cost over ETB 37 Million to the university.

On what provisions are in place to ensure project is completed in time, Construction Office Manager, Mr Abebe Banjaw, informed, ‘‘If a contractor causes inordinate delay in completing the contract, he or she will be liable to pay the penalty under liquidated damage.’’

The meeting began with Vice President for Business and Development, Mrs Rahel Elias, briefing gathering about the agreements which was attended by few directors and other officials. Most of the audience expressed their satisfaction and hoped Sawla Campus to be a full-fledged campus in future. Sawla Campus Coordinator, Mr Gebremedhin Chamano, was also present on the occasion.
