Arba Minch University’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences has rolled out 5th batch of 76 Doctors of Medicine in a glittering ceremony held at Main Auditorium, Main Campus on 1st December, 2018. Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia’s Minister of Science & Higher Education, Dr Hirut Woldemariam, and other dignitaries graced the event.Click here to see the pictures
Of this 5th Batch comprised of 76 Doctors of Medicine include 18 female and 58 males. Three outstanding graduates, Meseret Mulu Mekonen, with 3.54 CGPA, Suleyman Fantahun Endris, 3.50, were adjudged first and second; Aragaw Girma Abebaw and Tigist Geresu Tadele with 3.46 CGPAs claimed the third spot jointly.
The Minister of Science & Higher Education along with AMU President, Dr Damtew Darza, felicitated brilliant graduate, Meseret Mulu Mekonen, who topped the table scoring 3.54 CGPA with gold medal; while Tigist Geresu was honored for being third among all graduates and also notching up the first position among 18 of her cohorts.
Of 76 graduates, 37 were successfully tried to break the jinx of 3 CGPA but remained stuck under its periphery, on other hands, 39 of them aiming for total 4 could go past 3 CGPA as only four of them having tried hard went beyond 3.50 CGPA mark.
Dr Damtew Darza, giving a lowdown on University, said, we are paying huge attention on health science by facilitating appropriate trainings to our staff, and in this regard, 127 instructors, of which 11, 69 and 41 are pursuing PhD, Master and Specialty programs respectively within Ethiopia.
Further, showering praise on their achievement, he asked them to be cautious for medicine is life science and, said, you are privileged to deal with human lives. This profession is noble and demanding because it’s here, you got to be meticulously diligent and cautiously responsible. It’s you, who will make or mar, and your conduct in particular will not only decide your professional destiny but the fate of nation as well.
Dr Hirut Woldemariam, in her keynote address, reiterated that the economic, technological and human development of any nation can well be gauged from the way it, pays attention towards training and holistic education. And the incredible technological world, we are in is created by intelligently crafted education system, of which Ethiopia is genuinely striving and hankering to be the partaker.
Further, she adds, dear graduates, today is very important for you, your family and society because they could see the fruits of your efforts; but, let me tell you, it’s just the beginning, for there is so much to be done to establish effective healthcare system. And Ethiopia needs you to treat and restore the health of innumerable people and to deal and negotiate with unexpected challenges. Actually, the real test will lie in how wisely you handle them and create a situation, where citizens have a sigh of relief. And at the end, I humbly urge you to be time-cautious because if you waste time, you will waste an opportunity itself!
The ceremony got off to the musical start with Gamo Gofa Zone Cultural Band dancing to lilting cultural tunes and rendering different ethnic numbers. Delegate for Director of Corporate Communication Directorate, Mr Bedru Hirigo, anchored the program.
AMU Registrar, Dr Belete Yilma, appraised the gearing with the statistical data and led College of Medicine and Health Sciences Dean, Dr Tamiru Shibiru, in introducing graduates and administering the oath of profession to them.
Gamo Gofa Zone Administrator, Mr Arko Demessie, Ethiopian Medical Students Association member, Meskerem Aleka, government officials, AMU community members, kin and kith of graduates, well-wishers, patrons, friends and others were in attendance.
