Arba Minch University’s University-Industry Linkage and Technology Transfer Directorate has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with South Nations Nationalities and People’s Region Mines and Energy Agency for gemstones mining at Bonke woreda in Gamo Zone. 
The agreement in this regard was recently inked by Mr Teketel Mathewos Datago of SNNPR Mines and Energy Agency (Client) and AMU’s Research and Community Service Vice President, Dr Simon Shibru in Addis Ababa. 

The Client has entrusted AMU the crucial task of mining in Bonke Woreda to prospect precious gemstones such as emerald, quartz or garnet stones and related resources soon after signing of this contract. This short assignment is likely to get completed within five-month time or by July 2019, UIL-TTD Director, Dr Tolera Seda, informed.

The MoU states that the Consultant (AMU) shall carry out the study in all stages of contract services, reconnaissance, detailed geological mapping and reporting. It will ensure that the assignment entrusted is executed properly and in the stipulated timeframe.

Providing manpower, equipment, transport facilities, completing geological surveying and submitting the final technical report along with geological and mineral distribution maps of the area within 5 months from the date of signing of this agreement are other major tasks to be executed.

AMU exploration team having prospected delineated area will collect different types of sampling following standard weight for laboratory analysis to identify and measure the presence of gemstones, industrial minerals and other things. Based upon indication, it will also attempt to identify mineralogy and alteration zones for gold and base metals.

While the Client would make available all necessary inputs required and facilitate proper conditions to the study areas. It will comply with financial provisions outlined in the agreement. It will also assign technical focal person to communicate with study team leader for the accomplishment of this project.

The total budget outlay for this shortened gemstone mining and excavation project is ETB 496,670 that has to be executed in the timeframe of five months – July 2019, it’s learnt.
