College of Business and Economics (CoBE) at a glance
College of Business and Economics (CoBE) was founded as the Faculty of Business and Economics in 2003 as one of the Universities’ founding faculty members. It has been set up to produce researchers and academicians in various fields in the business and Economics. The college began the teaching-learning process with three key departments, i.e., Accounting and Finance, Economics and Management with only 10 instructors and 300 regular and 100 non-regular students. In 2010, the college inaugurated the department of Tourism and Hotel Management. The College runs its teaching activities at first degree level in the following fields of studies: Accounting and Finance, Economics, Management, and Tourism and Hotel Management.
Among the pillar departments of the college, Department of Economics is one of the founding department and among the oldest departments in the University too. Since its commencement, the department has been offering undergraduate and graduate program courses in regular, Extension and summer programs. Through its programs and academic staff, the department has been contributing significantly to training skilled manpower, research and consultancy services.
The management department is one of the founding affiliates of the College of Business and Economics. Currently, the department enrolls first degree students in different modalities like regular, evening, weekend, summer and distance programs. In addition to undergraduate programs, the management department provides need-based postgraduates programs. The department has made a remarkable and multifarious contribution in producing graduates who are well equipped with business knowledge and skill to play an enormous role in the development of the country.
Accounting and Finance department is launched in 2003 and since then the department is engaged in teaching regular, evening, weekend and distance students in BSc program in Accounting and Finance. Similarly, since 2011 the department launched MSc. program and delivering courses in a regular, evening and weekend sessions in Arba Minch and Sawula Campus. The department launched PhD program in 2023 PhD in Accounting and Finance (Specialization in Finance and Specialization in Accounting) after critically analyze needs of different stakeholders.
Department of Tourism Management was launched in 2010/11 with the prime objective of curbing the problem of human resources constraints in tourism and hospitality industry in Ethiopia by producing competent professionals in the field. Three years after its inception in 2015, Hotel Management program had been opened. Currently the department offers a postgraduate program, namely MA in Tourism and Hospitality Management.
Generally, the college has been restless in expanding programs since its establishment and there has been a significant increase in the number of postgraduate programs based on the needs of the local community, the public organizations and the private business and service sectors in particular and the national demand in general. Currently, the college offer the following postgraduate programs: MSc in Economic Policy Analysis , MSc in Agricultural Economics , MSc in Development Economics , MA in Economics (Summer in Service), MSc in Industrial Economics, MSc in Financial Economics, MSc in Natural Resource and Environmental Economics, MSc in Accounting & Finance, MSc in Finance and Investment, Masters of Business Administration( MBA) with MBA in Finance specialization, MBA in Marketing Specialization ,MBA in Executive and general MBA), MA in Project Management MA in Human Resource Management, MA in Entrepreneurship, and MA in Tourism and Hospitality Management.
Moreover, the college is running four PhD programs, mainly PhD in developmental Economics, PhD in Management studies (specialization in Marketing Management and Specialization in Human Resource Management), PhD in Agricultural Economics, and PhD in Accounting and Finance (Specialization in Finance and in Accounting).
Concurrently, the number of students and students are tremendously increased when compared with its inception phase and now a day the college has a total of 156 staffs (125 active and31 in the study leave with a PhD & above: (BA/BSc:MA/MSc: PhD) ratio of 1:106:18), and a total over 3237 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate studies in regular and non-regular sessions.
The college is playing a pivotal role in making valuable contribution for the overall development of Ethiopia in general and the South Ethiopia in particular by producing professionals in the field of business, finance, economics, tourism and hotel management. Furthermore, the college is rendering services in capacity building services for various governmental and non-governmental organizations’ employees through offering need based short-term training, community services and conducting problem solving research apart from teaching and learning.

4. Admissions
For undergraduate students the admission point is decided by Minister of education and after the students joined the college, they took freshman courses for one year. After they complete the freshman courses, they select the department they preferred to join and as the criteria of student placement to the department the college uses, the ESLEC result, CGPA, written exam and students’ preference and then after they admit to department based on the registrar rules and regulation. For postgraduate students’ eligibility criteria were NGAT exam result, educational background, educational profile and synopsis presentation and etc, based on the curriculum of the programs and postgraduate’s studies guideline. The application period and admission process is conducted based on the registrar rules and regulations. Regarding the fee structure for undergraduate student, the payment per credit hour is 125 Birr whereas for postgraduate (MSc) study payment per credit hour is 600 Birr while that of PhD is 700 birr per credit hour. Other payment issues for postgraduates’ students are treated with the post graduate payment guideline of the university.

6. Facilities and Resources
Internet rooms reserved for master’s and PhD students as well as for researchers in the college of business and economics but there is not a separate research center and library organized for researchers only. There is good internet access for researchers and academic staff and researchers get the software they need from the research from the campus ICT center. The college provides dormitory and cafeteria services for postgraduates’ students and there is internet service in their dormitory. There are two DSTV rooms and one game zone and for students’ recreational centers and there is abundant internet access point in the college.

Major activities performed by the clubs;
§ The clubs collected from teachers, students and the city residents and donated 63880 for one student suffered by kidney disease.
§ The clubs collected clothes and money from the students and teachers and donated for poor people and beggars
§ Tutorial has been given for freshman students before the final exam
§ For 56 orphan students and students who need financial support the club made a monthly contribution and donations such as soap ointment, pens and card money has been delivered.
§ With the support of campus career center and students counseling center, different consultation and guidance was given for the student
8. Career and Placement
Career counseling and skill development programs.
In our college there is a career center established to help the students regarding their future career and skill development. The center helps the students to explore their career options, career guidance, and career development dialogues and acquire the skills they need to succeed in the labor market. Graduates of the college mostly hired in public and private banks, Micro finance institutions, Ethiopian Airline, Ethio-telecom, revenue and custom authority, private and public companies, trade and investment bureau, tourism and culture bureau, and hotels and loges.
Internship opportunities and industry partnerships.
The college students always spend their two month summer in conducting internship. The main objectives of this internship were to give students the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired on campus in a real-life work situation. Apprenticeships and internships can provide on-the-job opportunities to integrate mentoring into employment experiences for the students. There is a good start at the college in creating partnership with the industry and the college signed 13 MoU with different organization and the college started preparation of TOR to accomplish shared goals with partners.
