Bio:
Dr. Tesfay Gebremariam Tesfahannes is an Associate Professor and the PhD Programs Coordinator in the Department of Physics at Arba Minch University, Ethiopia. He also serves as the Community Engagement Coordinator for the Faculty of Natural Sciences. His teaching encompasses a wide range of topics, including quantum optics, quantum machine learning, the quantum states of light, advanced quantum optics, and quantum information, catering to BSc, MSc, and PhD students.
With over 27 MSc students under his supervision, Dr. Tesfay is deeply committed to advancing academic research and education. Currently, he is advising five PhD students as a primary co-adviser in Quantum Optics and Information, with one student successfully completing their PhD in 2023. Additionally, he advises two African students from Morocco and Cameroon, as well as one MSc student from Arba Minch University.
Dr. Tesfay earned his Bachelor of Education in 2006 from Haramaya University and his Master of Science in Physics from Addis Ababa University in 2010. He obtained his PhD in theoretical physics (quantum optics and information) from Dalian University of Technology in China in 2018. His research interests focus on quantum optomechanics, exploring the quantum characteristics of optomechanical systems, including quantum entanglement and continuous-variable quantum information processing.
In recognition of his contributions to science and community development, Dr. Tesfay was appointed as the PhD Programs Coordinator and Community Engagement Coordinator in 2020. He has received several accolades, including letters of recognition from the Winter College on Optics at ICTP in Italy and the Ethiopian Physical Society's Annual Conference. He also received a letter of appreciation from the Ethiopian Physics Society for his involvement in the North America Summer School Program in 2022. That same year, he was honored as a TWAS Young Affiliate for the period 2022-2027. In 2023, Dr. Tesfay participated in the 20th Annual Meeting of the Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS Forum) held in Japan. He actively engages with various stakeholders in community outreach and serves on multiple committees. As a peer reviewer for both international and national journals, he has contributed to over 25 publications indexed in Scopus and Web of Science.
