Arba Minch University Sawla Campus rolled out a total of 95 graduates in its 6th convocation held on July 20, 2023 at Sawla; of the figure, 74 were males and 21 Females. Click here to see more pictures.
The Guest of Honor and the Chief Administrator of Gofa Zone, Dr. Getinet Begashaw, said that as it is obviously known that education is the key to get rid of all problems and foundation of progress and change. Accordingly, the government has given due emphasis to the sector and implementing several reform agendas to ensure quality education in the sector in general and in universities in particular. In his message to the graduates, Dr. Getinet advised that the graduates to work hard to become entrepreneurs and use the knowledge and skills acquired during their stay in university to the development and prosperity of their country.
Addressing the Audience, AMU president Dr. Damtew Darza said that Sawula Campus which started service delivery eight years ago has been doing several research and community service activities. According to the president, in 2023 budget year, 57% of the campus teachers involved in research work and 40 research projects were carried out; 13 have been completed and 3 out of them were published in reputable international and national journals.
He also noted that as the newest campus of the university the campus has infrastructure issues that need to be addressed; thus, to make the campus a successful educational and research hub along with the university’s effort, local communities and administrations’ unreserved support is of a greater importance.
Sawla Campus Dean, Mr. Gebremedhin Chameno, recalled that Sawla Campus became operational in 2008 by enrolling 191 students in four departments and currently the campus has enrolled 3,199 students in 30 undergraduate and master programs. He also pointed out that the campus has graduated 1,620 students in different disciplines for the past eight years. He further added that, in addition to the teaching-learning activities, the campus is currently conducting several research and community engagement activities that address the socio-economic challenges of the community in the catchment.
The president of the Alumni Association of Arba Minch University, Mr. Ermias Alemu, in his part said that it is a great honor to be a graduate of AMU as it is one of the best and famous higher education institutions in Ethiopia. The President tells to the graduates to serve their country and society with honesty and integrity in the field they have studied and called them to be the member of the Association and participate in the activities.
AMU Registrar and Alumni Directorate Director, Dr. Malebo Mancha, during his presentation of graduates’ record said that 3,147 students took university exit exam which was introduced nationwide this year. He pointed out that 2,366 or 75.18% of the graduating students who took the exam were promoted. He added that at Sawla Campus, 347 students took the exit exam and 272 or 72.72 % of the candidates passed.
Among female graduates Genet Mekonin from Food Technology Process Engineering department got presented Special Award for her outstanding CGPA of 3.89 and Teklemariam Tesfaye who clocked CGPA of 3.9733 from department of Civil Engineering was also awarded Gold Medal for his top score among all Sawla Campus graduates of class 2023. Moreover, Rabira Urge from department of Automotive Engineering with CGPA of 3.97 got presented special award of 10,000 ETB from Greater Gofa Relief Association, GARA.
Gofa Development Association gave two graduates each 6,000.00 ETB to cover their back-home transport and related fees in consideration of their social and economic situations.
Academic Affairs Vice president Dr. Alemayehu Chufamo presented graduates of respective streams and officially announced their graduation; Communication Affairs Directorate Director Mr. Bedru Hirigo mastered the ceremony and Gofa Zone Cultural Band graced the program.
