Arba Minch University inked two-year academic cooperation agreement with CY Cergy Paris University, France and officially launched a collaborative project that aims to train students on geothermal exploration, on October 6, 2023.

AMU President, Dr Damtew Darza, said that Arba Minch University has signed agreements with various international and local institutions; a variety of collaborative academic, research, and community engagement endeavors are going on. Dr. Damtew also added that the university has rich experience in successfully executing collaborative projects with different organizations; therefore, AMU is committed to carry out all the tasks outlined in this agreement. In his final remark the president acknowledged Dr. Demelash Wondimagegnehu and his team for their effort to bring such collaborative project which is in line with AMU's purpose as university of research.

E/r Timothei Dupaigne from CY Cergy Paris University noted that the agreement comes in the frame of a grant secured from French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. He mentioned that, as with AMU, a similar agreement was inked with Addis Ababa University as part of the Ethiopia-France Focused Trainings for Geothermal Programme, which aims to teach Ethiopian students the foundations of geothermal exploration. He also stated that his university and the French Embassy in Ethiopia are very interested in long-term relationships with Ethiopian universities, thus long-term and high level agreements and projects on several academic and research areas will surly avail in the future.

Vice Scientific Director of AWTi and Coordinator of the project, Dr. Demelash Wondimagegnehu, said Ethiopia is among the few countries in Africa with a significant amount of geothermal resources; however, it has been noted that our nation lacks the skilled labour needed to effectively utilize this geothermal resource. Therefore, the collaborative project on hand will have significant role to Ethiopia to properly utilize the untapped geothermal resource through producing skilled and young professionals in the field. Dr. Demelash further explained that CY, AMU, and AAU are the main collaborators in this two years project and other five Ethiopian universities also will have the role of partnership.
