Department of Horticulture


The Horticulture Department of Arba Minch University was established in the year 2007 under the College of Agricultural Sciences. One of the key constraints to the growth and development of the horticulture sector in the country is lack of a well-qualified manpower in the field. The undergraduate program is primarily initiated to contribute its part in developing skilled manpower in this regard.


The Department of Horticulture has a mission of offering high quality education and training, conducting demand driven and problem solving research and consultancy and community service in the area of horticulture.


The Department of Horticulture will be one of the recognized departments of Horticulture in Ethiopian Higher Education Institutions and center of excellence in banana and pome fruits in Ethiopia by 2020

Academic Programs

The department currently runs one undergraduate (BSc) regular program with 135 students in three batches.


The department currently conducts researches on diseases and insect pests of apple and factors affecting coffee quality in GamoGofa areas. The future research will focus on, but not limited to:

  • Improvement, adoption/adaptation of horticultural technologies
  • macro and micro propagation of horticultural crops
  • Agronomy/physiology (and  management) of horticultural crops
  • Value addition to horticultural produces
  • Post harvest technology which help reduce produce losses
  • Biodiversity (collection, characterization and conservation) of underutilized horticultural crops (e.g. medicinal plants)
  • Food security and value chain


The department has an ongoing and collaborative research project on identification of local and adaptation of improved Coffee Arabic varieties in Gamo Gofa areas for yield and quality.

Community Service

The department has a plan to provide community service through training and conducting development projects which address societal problems on various areas of horticulture.
