Historical Background

Medical  Laboratory  Science  education  is  a  mainstay  for  development  and  alleviation  of  rampant  health related  problems  of  a  given  nation.  It  can  offer  opportunities  to  the  citizens  of  a  country  to play a pivotal role in bringing and sustaining the required development in the health care  delivery system. The  laboratory  service as an essential component of  the health care  delivery  system  requires  properly trained professional and thus formal training of medical laboratory professionals in Ethiopia was started in 1954.

In Arba  Minch University, the  Department  of  Medical Laboratory  Science was  established in September 2007  under the  College  of  Medicine and Health Sciences with  52 students in  first  degree  level.  Despite  the efforts  made to  strengthen  the  capacity  of  academic  staff  and laboratory facilities, the  department had  discontinued  hosting  newly  placed  students  for  three  years  (2009-2011).  After  series  of  discussions with the College, the University and the Ministry of Education, it was re-opened and started hosting newly placed students in 2012. Hence, currently the Department has 26 first year students.

Previously,  a  total  of  80 qualified Medical Laboratory Science professionals were graduated with  BSc degree  in two Batches  in  mid of  2010  and  2012. They are  employed  and serving  in  different  hospitals, health centers, research institutes and other sectors.

In the near  future, the Department will embark  on extension and evening programs  to give the opportunities for professionals who seek  opportunities to upgrade themselves. In addition, different postgraduate programs will be started.

Mission

The  Department  of  Medical Laboratory Science  has a mission  of  offering relevant  and  quality  education and training; conducting demand driven research and rendering accessible community services.

Vision

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science aspires to be the leading center of training in the field of Medical  Laboratory  Science that  produce  qualified  professionals  who  are equipped  with  knowledge and skills to perform  various  tests that  play an important role in the  diagnosis  and treatment  of  disease; and who  can  participate in identifying and solving  the community  problems in various  health perspectives  in the Ethiopia by 2020.

Academic staff profile

Currently, the Department has  14 academic staff members and 2 technical assistants. Among the academic staffs, 7 are Lecturers (2 females), 4 are on Msc degree study in different universities of the country, and 3 are Graduate Assistant II (3 females).
