Arba Minch University (AMU) and the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute (EMI) have been officially designated as Regional Training Centers (RTCs) by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The designation was approved on 22 June, 2026 during the 80th Session of the WMO Executive Council (EC), marking a significant achievement for both institutions and Ethiopia. Senior University officials expressed their delight over the achievement, describing it as a testament to years of institutional commitment, collaboration, and academic excellence. Arba Minch University (AMU), in collaboration with the Ethiopian Maritime Authority (EMA) and Ethiopian Navy (ETHN) has started conducting a five-round comprehensive bathymetric survey at the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) since February 06, 2026. Click here to see more photos.

A high-level delegation from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) along with WMO regional representative from the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute paid an assessment visit to Arba Minch Technology Institute (AMiT), Arba Minch University (AMU) on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, to evaluate the University’s preparedness to host a WMO Regional Training Centre (RTC). The proposed Centre is aimed to train meteorological professionals from East Africa and beyond, strengthening regional capacity in meteorology, hydrology, and climate resilience, in collaboration with the Ethiopian Meteorological Institute.
