Main activities of the center:

  1. Endemic, endangered and threatened medicinal plants collection and identification; extraction and analysis of biologically active compounds; and identifying economic and ecological values of these medicinal plants.
  2. Economically and socially valuable plant varieties (Enset, Moringa, etc) collection and identification; analysis of its nutritional, economical, socio-cultural, and ecological values; and identifying common diseases affecting the plant variety and finding the solution. 
  3. Identification of neglected and underutilized crops about traditional knowledge and food security values.
  4. Endemic, endangered and threatened aromatic, oily, and other economically important plants collection and identification; extraction and analysis of biologically active compounds and formulation of ingredients. 
  5. Aquaculture construction to conserve and sustainable use for a variety of fish species.
  6. Wildlife inventory and status assessment of national parks like Nech Sar, Maze, and Mago and Maze.
  7. Assessment of indigenous knowledge on animal production and husbandry.  
  8. Ecological studies of plant diversity in national parks and forest priority areas.
  9. Microbial diversity studies for biotechnological application purposes.
  10. Indigenous ecological knowledge for climate change and mitigation.
  11. Genetic diversity of plants and animals in different Agro-ecology
