Background
The Faculty of Water Supply and Environmental Engineering (FWSEE) traces its roots to the establishment of the Arba Minch Water Technology Institute in 1986, which was established to develop qualified human resources and undertake research and professional services in the water sector. Sanitary Engineering was among the Institute's initial areas of training.
Over the years, the Faculty's academic focus evolved in response to Ethiopia's growing demand for professionals in water supply, sanitation, and environmental protection. The original focus on Sanitary Engineering gradually expanded to encompass broader areas of environmental engineering, reflecting the increasing interconnection between water, sanitation, environmental sustainability, and public health.
Following the establishment of Arba Minch University in 2004 and subsequent institutional restructuring of water-related academic programs, the Faculty continued to expand and strengthen its academic and research activities in response to national and international needs.
Today, FWSEE is committed to excellence in education, research, innovation, community engagement, and industry linkage in water supply, sanitation, and environmental engineering. The Faculty offers B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. programs and contributes to sustainable solutions for water security, sanitation, environmental protection, and climate resilience.

Academic Programs
The Faculty offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs designed to prepare competent professionals and researchers in water supply, sanitation, and environmental engineering. The B.Sc. and M.Sc. programs are delivered through an Outcome-Based Education (OBE) curriculum, emphasizing competencies, practical skills, innovation, and professional readiness.

Laboratories and Facilities
The Faculty of Water Supply and Environmental Engineering is equipped with modern laboratory and workshop facilities that support teaching, research, practical training, and innovation. These facilities provide students and researchers with opportunities to develop hands-on technical skills and conduct applied research addressing real-world water and environmental challenges.
The Faculty's facilities include:
- Water and Wastewater Quality Testing Laboratories – Four specialized laboratories supporting comprehensive physical, chemical, and microbiological analysis of water and wastewater.
- Air Quality Testing Laboratory – Dedicated facilities for air quality monitoring, environmental assessment, and pollution-related research.
- Plumbing Workshop – A practical training facility for plumbing systems, installation, operation, and maintenance.
Shared and Supporting Facilities:
The Faculty utilizes a range of shared laboratories and workshops from other faculties and academic units to support practical teaching, training, and research activities. These facilities complement the Faculty's specialized laboratories and provide students with hands-on experience across relevant engineering disciplines.
· Hydraulics Laboratory – Utilized by the Faculty to support practical teaching and training in hydraulics, hydrology, water resources, and irrigation engineering courses.
· Construction Materials Laboratory – Utilized for practical teaching and training in construction materials, civil engineering, and related courses.
· Mechanical Engineering Workshops and Laboratories – Utilized by the Faculty to support practical teaching and training in mechanical systems, equipment, and engineering applications relevant to water supply and environmental engineering.

Academic Staff
The Faculty of Water Supply and Environmental Engineering is supported by a qualified and multidisciplinary academic team committed to excellence in teaching, research, innovation, and community engagement. The Faculty currently has 37 academic staff members, comprising 30 male and 7 female staff. Most of the academic staff hold Master's degrees, while five faculty members hold PhDs, including four Associate Professors and one Assistant Professor.
The staff bring expertise across a broad range of disciplines, including water supply and sanitation engineering, environmental engineering, hydraulic engineering, water resources engineering, geotechnical engineering, air quality and meteorology, and industrial chemistry.
Technical Staff
The Faculty currently has one chief technical assistant and two technical Assistants who provide technical support across the Faculty's laboratories, workshops, and practical training activities.
Students
The Faculty of Water Supply and Environmental Engineering supports students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, providing education and research opportunities in water supply, sanitation, water resources, and environmental engineering.
