History and major milestones
The College of Agricultural Sciences, one of the colleges and institutes of Arb Minch University, has been playing its part in producing skilled human resources in the effort to promote science and technology to ensure educational accessibility, quality, and equity since its establishment in 2008. The college is located in Arba Minch town, Gamo Zone, Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' Region, 440 km southwest of Addis Ababa. The College of Agricultural Sciences, which has set a permanent goal of becoming a renowned higher education institution that contributes to the development and growth of the country by producing qualified scholars through the fields of teaching, research and community engagement, as well as university-industry linkages and technology transfer, has been organized into 6 different departments and eleven (11) different undergraduate programs, namely Plant Science, Animal Science, Veterinary Science, Fisheries and other aquatic Sceinces, Rural Development and Agricultural Extension, Agribusiness and Value Chain Management, Agricultural Economics, Forestry, Natural Resources Management, Horticulture, Food Science and Postharvest Technology. It is contributing to meeting the demand for skilled manpower in the agricultural sector. Currently, the college offers 18 Master’s degree programs in its regular program, namely Agronomy, Soil Science, Plant Breeding, Animal Nutrition, Animal Production, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Dairy Science and Technology, Veterinary Public Health, Veterinary Epidemiology, Veterinary Parasitology, Watershed Management; Agro-forestry, Horticulture, Rural Development & Agricultural Extension with specialization on rural development as well as agricultural communication and innovation, Irrigation Agronomy, Post-harvest Management, Sustainable Natural Resource Development. The college is currently offering five (5) PhD programs in Animal Nutrition, Animal Production, Soil & Water Management, Horticulture and Agronomy. In addition, the college offers summer programs in various undergraduate programs in Animal Science, Plant Science, Natural Resource Management; Animal Health; and Horticulture and also offers weekend in Animal health programs. The College of Agricultural Sciences is conducting relevant and problem-solving research in collaboration with two research centers established to conduct advanced research in the agricultural sub-sector, the Gircha Highland Fruits and Vegetables Research Center and the Research Center for Livestock and Fisheries.
