Arba Minch University hosted the 10th national symposium on Research for Development on 26th April, 2024 in Main Campus. Researchers from across universities of Ethiopia and PhD candidates from South Africa and Germany participated in the event. Click here to see more photos.

Dr. Alemayehu Chufamo, Academic Affairs Vice President and the President’s delegate, said in his insightful opening speech on the occasion, Ethiopia has many resources, but still it’s in poverty; so, researchers should work hard to create entrepreneurial opportunities to the nation. Furthermore, he stressed on Ethiopian culture of living together and brotherhood which now a days has got endangered and insisted on the research mind-set to capitalize the indigenous knowledge to resolve current conflicts in different parts of the country.

Executive research directorate director and delegated vice president for research and community engagement, Dr Tesfaye Habtemariam, gave a lowdown on AMU’s profile and moderated the first session.

Dr. Woretaw Bezabih, the keynote speaker of the day, entrepreneur, author of seven books and co-author of six books, remarked in his speech that entrepreneurial mind-set will be the solution for the political and economic instability in the country. Academics and research in higher education institutions should focus on creating visionary entrepreneurs so that by creating multiple job opportunities, they play significant role in boosting national economy, he noted.  He also addressed the researchers to mind well the gap that triggering thoughtful queries that why we are in poverty having ample resources; why there are so many conflicts and wars in our country lasting for lots of decades as we are people of such a culture of brotherhood and unity, etc. Hence, it requires us to deal with the gaps scientifically, Dr. Woretaw said.  

Dr. Toyiba Shafi, a presenter from Dilla University, speaking on “Impact of Production Efficiency of Enset on Food Security and Economic Empowerment of Rural Women” said that women are actively participating in Enset planting and production which impacts the food security and empowers themselves financially, yet their benefits are going for husbands who aren’t fully involved in the production process.

Dr Abate Demissie of Arba Minch University presenting a research paper on “English Language Teachers’ Perceptions and Teaching Strategies in mixed ability classes”, said that though teachers understand  it, they are not implementing the during their instructions.

Researchers from 18 Ethiopian universities and two foreign universities participated in the event and 26 research papers were presented.
