Arba Minch University (AMU) has celebrated its 5th Doctoral Day at the Main Campus on May 6, 2026. The event brought together senior university officials, 38 newly graduated PhD scholars, and current doctoral students pursuing their studies at the university. Click here to see more photos.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Teklu Wegayehu, AMU Vice President for Research and Cooperation and delegate of the President, stated that doctoral education represents the highest level of intellectual and research pursuit, playing a vital role in generating evidence-based solutions to national and global challenges. He noted that doctoral scholars are future innovators, researchers, and leaders who contribute to sustainable development through knowledge creation and research innovation. Dr. Teklu added that the celebration reflects AMU’s strong commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, and societal transformation, while also serving as an important platform for scholarly exchange, presentation of research findings, and strengthening collaboration among scholars and institutions.
Professor Yisehak Kechero, Director of the School of Graduate Studies at AMU, stated that the university continues to place doctoral education at the center of its mission to advance academic excellence, research, and community engagement. He emphasized that the Doctoral Day celebration serves as an important platform for PhD scholars to present their research findings, receive constructive feedback, exchange ideas with experts and peers, and strengthen academic collaboration across disciplines and institutions. Professor Yisehak further noted that doctoral education plays a significant role in fostering innovation, building a knowledge-based economy, and addressing societal challenges through research-based solutions. During the occasion, he also presented a paper titled “Opportunities and Challenges in an Emerging Context,” focusing on the opportunities and challenges of PhD education at AMU and the university’s contribution to producing highly qualified researchers and scholars.
Newly graduated PhD scholars presented their dissertation work and shared their academic experiences and a panel discussion followed which was chaired by Professor Yisehak Kechero. Reflections from university leaders and participants underscored a renewed commitment to more proactive engagement in research and publication, as well as the strengthening of collaborative academic networks.
Finally, the event concluded with the recognition of outstanding PhD scholars who completed their studies within four years and fulfilled all publication requirements, who were awarded 10,000 Ethiopian Birr each in recognition of their achievement. In addition, their supervisors were honored with certificates of recognition and received 10,000 Ethiopian Birr, while co-supervisors were awarded certificates and 5,000 Ethiopian Birr each in acknowledgment of their contributions to academic excellence. The program was anchored by Dr. Asrat Guja.
