Introduction
Arba Minch University (AMU) was established in 2004 at the premises of the former Arba Minch water technology institute (AWTI), which was established in 1978 E.C. The University’s main campus is located at 505 km south west of Addis Ababa and 5km north of Arba Minch town on the road to Addis Ababa. Currently the University encompasses institutes, colleges and schools that conduct education in diversified fields of study which ranges from undergraduate to PhD level. AMU is one of the fastest growing Universities in Ethiopia regarding the number of colleges, fields of study, academic staff, technical and infrastructural capacities. As per 2020 Ministry of Science and Higher Education’s classification, AMU has become one among the eight research focused Universities in Ethiopia.
Among the colleges, College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), formerly faculty of health sciences was established in 2007 to respond for national demand of human resource in health sciences. Currently, the College has three schools and five departments. The School of Medicine (SOM) is one among the three schools.
The School of Medicine is situated at Nechsar Campus. From its conception, it has been focusing towards core agenda of running the programs which earnestly complement and supplement the healthcare needs of the nation. The School consists of seven departments namely department of internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, gynecology and obstetrics, pediatrics, anatomy & biomedical science.
In the past, Ethiopian human resource for health had acute shortage of trained healthcare professionals. Therefore, having identified the cause, the strategic planning primarily focusing at producing skilled health professionals in the specified time frame was duly formulated.
