Arba Minch University (AMU) College of Agricultural Sciences (CAS) conducted a pivotal international training workshop focused on scientific writing and publication in Kulfo campus on May 27, 2025. Click here to see more photos.
This workshop was organized in partnership with distinguished international scholars and aimed to bolster the scientific writing competencies of academic and research affiliated staff. Over 30 participants including deans, department heads, and coordinators participated in both physical and virtual modalities. Key discussion points included the impact of artificial intelligence on research, management issues in publications, and the significance of collaboration in enhancing research quality. The workshop not only focused on improving writing skills but also aimed to foster a collaborative environment where participants could share experiences and insights.
Degife Assefa (PhD), the dean of the CAS, articulated the workshop's purpose to be to equip staff with the necessary skills for writing scientific papers and publishing that meet international standards. Dr. Degefa encouraged participants to engage actively, share insights, and collaborate throughout the workshop for the learning process thrives in an open and respectful environment.
Prof. Yishak Kechero, a researcher and an academician in Animal Sciences Department and Project Coordinator for Agricultural Productivity in South Ethiopia under the IUC-Project at AMU, highlighted the significance of such trainings to strengthen faculty research capabilities, crucially support achieving key performance indicators (KPIs) within the university strategy and to enhance future collaborations that would further benefit AMU and its academic and research community. He expressed his gratitude to the participants for prioritizing their professional development amid their busy schedules underscoring the necessity for international exposure in academic writing to elevate the university’s research output.
Prof. Geert P.J. Janssens from Ghent University, a renowned expert in animal nutrition, delivered a comprehensive presentation on the dos and don’ts of scientific publishing drawing from his extensive experience with over 400 publications in internationally recognized journals. Prof. Geert provided invaluable insights into the research publication process covering essential topics such as starting research core, emphasizing the importance of literature reviews, and identifying research gaps. Under the study design: discussion of the significance of novelty, relevance, and statistical considerations; under writing a scientific paper: offering guidance on structuring papers including materials and methods, results, discussions, conclusions, and acknowledgments were explained. Lastly, under Publication Ethics: ethical practices of publishing including avoiding simultaneous submissions and ensuring all co-authors have been dealt with.
