Bogale Gebremariam (PhD, Ing.), the delegate for AMU president and Vice President for Academic Affairs, opening the ceremony, said, the significance of the victory of Adwa is that it is not only the victory for Ethiopians but also the victory for all Africans and black people in general who suffered under the yoke of slavery. Dr. Bogale also drew a parallelism between the ancestors’ Adwa victory on colonial powers versus the contemporary generation continued struggle against poverty in general and the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam/GERD/ and development in Ethiopia’s water politics in specific terming it as the “Second Adwa”. The spirit of cooperation, unity, determination and strength yet not seen since the Adwa campaign and witnessed in the construction of the GERD from its beginning to completion marked a historical Ethiopian patriotic resilience in the face the world, he remarked.
Teklu Wegayehu (PhD), the Vice President for Research and Cooperation, and others echoed the same sentiment that the current generation has a historical responsibility and obligation to follow in the footsteps of the victorious ancestors on the colonial powers at Adwa. Dr. Teklu stressed the importance of unity, determination, and patriotism in achieving national visions of development and prosperity.
Abera Uncha (PhD), dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities also reiterated the importance of Adwa as a symbol of freedom, honor, and identity; it was a victory of courage, unity and determination which marked global pride for the black race inspiring the spirit of freedom and equality against the colonial powers.
Patriot Tesfaye Gemeda, chairman of the regional association of Patriots, also addressed the gathering acknowledging the sacrifices made by our martyr ancestors in the war against the fascist invaders and quoted the contributions to protect and keep free, safe Ethiopia for the contemporary generation. Patriot Tesfaye called up on the young generation to follow the footsteps of the ancestors, defend and develop the nation, overcome poverty keeping unity and determination the like it was in the Victory Adwa and as what has been done in the construction contribution and public diplomacy during the GERD construction challenges globally.
Kasu Tumiso (Assistant Professor), from department history and heritage management, in his paper presentation entitled “The History and Historical Background of Ethiopian Women's Heroism" detailed the crucial roles played by women in the Adwa struggle. The other paper presenter, Mohammed Seid (Lecturer), from department history and heritage management, on his topic “What was the Purpose of Adwa Remembrance?” focused on the factors contributing to the victory including the people's perseverance, determination, unity, diplomatic skills, and deep patriotism.
Seid Ahmed (PhD), the Director of Language and Cultural Studies Institute along with other colleagues led the discussion which followed the paper presentations.
AMU staff, students, Patriots from the regional association, the former Ethiopian Army members of Gamo Zone, Gamo Zone Administration Police, and other community members graced the ceremony; Zebra Circus Group performed artistic musical performances in the events in the way it instills the same spirit in the youngsters.
