Arba Minch University (AMU), through its College of Business and Economics, in collaboration with the AMU Institutional University Cooperation (AMU-IUC) and Resilient Rural Livelihoods in South Ethiopia (SP2), held a training on “Writing High-Quality Scientific Journal Articles and How to Get Published” for academic and research staff on September 17, 2026, at Chamo Campus. In his opening remarks, Dr. Wondwossen Jerene, Dean of the College of Business and Economics, highlighted research as one of the key functions of AMU as a research-focused institution. He noted that engagement in research serves two major purposes: identifying and addressing major community challenges by proposing evidence-based solutions, and publishing research findings in reputable international journals. Dr. Wondwossen further explained that publishing in reputable journals enhances the University’s global visibility, strengthens its recognition, and elevates its institutional profile, while also increasing the recognition and influence of its researchers. He expressed his belief that the training would provide participants with practical guidance and essential skills in scientific writing, manuscript structuring, responding to reviewers, and successfully navigating the publication process. The initiative would support PhD students and early-career researchers in their professional development and help them establish connections with renowned scholars that could contribute to their future academic growth, he also noted.
Dr. Ashenafi Duguma, Project Leader, researcher, and coordinator of the training, emphasized that publication is one of the key performance indicators of a research university. He noted that strengthening AMU’s competitiveness requires academic and research staff to engage actively in research and disseminate their findings through high-quality publications. Drawing on his experience in research, academic publication, and research capacity development, he highlighted that the training aims to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to develop high-quality scientific manuscripts, publish their findings in reputable international journals, and learn from the experiences of internationally renowned scholars. He further emphasized that the knowledge and skills gained through the training would contribute to participants’ continued academic growth and strengthens AMU’s research and publication culture.
Prof. Miet Maertens, Professor of Agricultural and Development Economics at KU Leuven and trainer of the event, noted that training on scientific writing and the publication process can help researchers improve the quality of their manuscripts, reduce the likelihood of desk rejection, and strengthen their academic credibility. She added that developing these skills can increase researchers’ publication success and enable them to communicate their findings more clearly and effectively. The training, she said, would therefore help participants strengthen important aspects of scientific writing and learn effective approaches to communicating and publishing their research findings.
