Arba Minch University (AMU) recently held a two days training aimed at enhancing the advisory and coaching skills of its academic staff at Main Campus from February 27-28, 2025. The training is part of the Ethiopian Super-Stars project running from September 2023 to August 2026. Click here to see more photos.
AMU PG Coordinator, a delegate for School of Graduate Studies Directorate Office, and training organizer, Nebiyu Yemaneh (PhD), welcoming trainees and opening the training, said, the training will play a key role in shaping future academic leaders within their discipline and aims to train 210 PhD supervisors to improve their coaching, mentoring, and the supervisory skill of the supervisors. In this training, we focused on ABC (Autonomous, Belongingness, and Competency) model, he noted.
The PhD supervision training is very important because students need a good skillful advisor and all skills required to supervise are acquired from this inspiring and insightful training, he further added. The training is the continuation of the first round training held last November and will be continuous for other staffs in the next phases till the target trainee number for the initiative is achieved, Dr. Nebiyu underscored. According to him, the initiative involves seven Ethiopian universities: Addis Ababa, Ambo, Arba Minch, Bahir Dar, Hawassa, Jimma, and Mekelle universities and is coordinated by Jimma University from Ethiopia and Ghent University from Belgium and VLIRUOS supports it financially.
Biruk Brihanu (PhD), a trainer and lecturer from Hawassa University, said that the training helps supervisors with the skills needed to take on a scientific leadership role and addresses challenges faced by PhD students. The program is important to strengthen Ethiopia’s doctoral education system and improve supervisors' problem solving abilities, Legacy building, mentorship and development, intellectual stimulation, collaboration and team dynamics, research area alignment, positive student-supervisor relationship, and the like to support PhD students complete their research efficiently, he remarked.
Among the trainees from Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences, College of Social Sciences and Humanities, Thomas Toma (PhD) remarked that the knowledge we gained from the training is invaluable in addressing the challenges our PhD students face. By updating our supervisory techniques, we can offer more effective guidance and ensure students complete their research with greater efficiency, he said. It is also essential for staying updated on the latest best practices in PhD supervision and enhances our ability to guide students effectively, improving mentorship and research outcomes, he underscored. Suggesting on the training’s continuity, the training should continue as it is so impactful for one’s career development, he noted.
