Speaking at the opening ceremony, Dr. Eng. Abdella Kemal, President of AMU, stated that the university is among Ethiopia’s leading higher education institutions committed to excellence in teaching, research, community engagement, and internationalization, which serves as a core pillar of its vision through strong global academic partnerships. He noted that the conference deliberations focused on critical areas including renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, climate resilience, transportation systems, manufacturing technologies, and sustainable urban development.

Dr. Muluneh Lemma, Scientific Director of Arba Minch Institute of Technology welcomed participants and stated that the conference serves as a meeting point for minds and experiences from different institutions, professions, and nations united by the shared belief that technological progress must ultimately benefit people, communities, and the environment. He explained that the institute’s PhD scholars and graduates are actively contributing to Ethiopia’s cyber security, artificial intelligence, and digitalization agenda through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research efforts. He further noted that the recent national accreditation of the Ethiopian International Journal of Engineering and Technology and its inclusion in internationally recognized indexing in Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) platforms represent significant achievements for both the institute and the university. Concluding his remarks, he stated that 14 high-quality research papers were presented during the conference, while four innovative projects focusing on sustainable development and community impact were exhibited as part of the program.

Dr. Getasew Ashagre, Assistant Professor and researcher at Addis Ababa University and the first keynote speaker, speaking on “Industry 4.0 and Why for Ethiopia,” emphasized that Industry 4.0 is vital for transforming Ethiopia’s manufacturing sector, enhancing global competitiveness, and driving sustainable economic growth through artificial intelligence, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT). He noted that the adoption of smart manufacturing technologies would enable Ethiopia to leapfrog traditional industrial stages, create high-quality jobs, and improve efficiency in sectors including agriculture and mining. Similarly, the second keynote speaker, Prof. Fisseha Mekuria, scientist and researcher from Malmo University, Sweden, focused on “Technology Innovation for Sustainable Digitalization” and explained how technological innovations leverage artificial intelligence, IoT, block chain, and cloud computing can optimize resource efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and promote circular economies. He further highlighted that advancements such as AI-powered energy management systems and smart agricultural monitoring enable data-driven decision-making and accelerate progress toward achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The conference brought together researchers from universities across Ethiopia and abroad, along with participants from national and international institutions representing diverse fields, including Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Educational and Behavioral Sciences, Civil Engineering, Geography, and Environmental Studies, among others. In addition to the research presentations and discussions, an exhibition showcasing small-scale innovative technologies and projects focusing on sustainable development and community impact were held as part of the program. The conference concluded with strong calls for enhanced collaboration among academic institutions, researchers, industries, and policymakers to promote innovation-driven solutions for sustainable development and technological advancement in Ethiopia and beyond. Dr. Mohammed Abebe anchored the program.
