The Arba Minch University/ AMU/ - Inter-University Cooperation (AMU-IUC) carried out five-day digital literacy training for secondary schools ICT teachers from March 19 - 23, 2025. The training was aimed to equip educators from Arba Minch city and its surrounding areas with essential digital skills that are increasingly vital for modern teaching practices; over 30 dedicated trainers from local high schools participated. Teklu Wegayehu (PhD), Vice President of Research and Cooperation at AMU, emphasized the significance of timely exchange of technology-based information with local schools teachers in educational settings. This training was designed to ensure the task of improving and expanding ICT infrastructure in schools to properly provide the necessary skills for effective teaching and learning, he noted.

Fasil Eshetu (PhD), the Project Manager, highlighted the importance of strengthening connections between higher education and local schools. AMU-IUC collaboration with the five Belgian institutions aims to leverage research resources to improve digital literacy in secondary schools thereby addressing the digital communication gaps in the region, the manager said.

Haileyesus Abera, TISP-1 Deputy Leader and PhD Scholar in Computer and Software Engineering, further elaborating the training objectives and anticipated impacts on local education, said, the project as its outreach activities renders trainings to improve ICT facilities in secondary schools.

The trainees stated that they have had new concepts and procedures that will capacitate and inspire them to conduct quality teaching and strengthen institutional cooperation between AMU and nearby schools. This training significantly empowered ICT teachers, thus it will ultimately benefit their students and enhance overall educational outcomes. The training program comprised 20 sessions each lasting for two hours covering a range of topics: introduction to digital literacy, essential digital tools for educators, navigating the internet effectively, and digital content creation. With a total of 40 hours of instruction, the training specifically targeted to enhance the digital literacy skills local schools’ teachers, equip them with effective teaching tools, and foster critical thinking and ethical use of digital resources.
