At the signing ceremony, Dr. Teklu Wegayehu, Vice President for Research and Cooperation, emphasized that Indigenous Knowledge (IK) offers valuable insights for tourism, culture, and community development. He highlighted that collaborative projects with regional bureaus can help preserve indigenous heritage, promote local cultural practices, and strengthen community engagement. Integrating IK into collaborative initiatives not only supports sustainable development but also fosters cultural pride and practical solutions tailored to local contexts. “AMU is always ready to work in partnership to leverage both indigenous and scientific knowledge for the benefit of our communities,” he underscored.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Tariku Ocha, Deputy Head of the South Ethiopia Regional Culture and Sports Bureau, noted that the collaboration between Indigenous Knowledge holders, researchers, scientists, and local authorities can yield significant benefits in cultural preservation, environmental sustainability, and innovative problem-solving.
Mr. Tafesse Walea, Director of the Institute of Culture and Language Studies at AMU, explained that the agreement formalizes and strengthens the long-standing collaboration between the university and the regional bureaus. The MoU is designed to promote indigenous knowledge systems, preserve cultural heritage, and support sustainable tourism development in the region. It will enable the institutions to work toward common goals by sharing both human and material resources. Mr. Tafesse emphasized that the signing of the MoU not only elevates the existing cooperation but also establishes a continuous framework that remains effective regardless of changes in department or bureau leadership.
The MoU was jointly signed by Dr. Teklu Wegayehu, Vice President for Research and Cooperation at AMU; Mr. Teklegen Getahun, representative of the Head of the Regional Tourism Bureau; Mr. Tariku Ocha, Deputy Head of the Culture and Sports Bureau; and Mr. Desalegn Biru, Head of the Office of the Nationalities Council. The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the 9th International Symposium on Indigenous Knowledge.
