It combined classroom sessions with hands-on practice, including CPR demonstrations at the Nech-sar Campus Demonstration Laboratory.
Speaking at the closing session, Dr. Teklu Wegayehu, Vice President for Research and Cooperation and local project coordinator, highlighted that the AMU–IUC Project has contributed significantly to capacity building, staff development, and community outreach, benefiting both the University and surrounding communities.
He noted that establishing standard daycare centers is a national priority and a key institutional responsibility for universities and other government organizations. Dr. Teklu emphasized that quality daycare services support working families, promote child development, and strengthen institutional productivity, and he encouraged trainees to apply the knowledge and skills gained in practice. He also expressed appreciation to the organizers and coordinators of the project and assured AMU’s continued commitment to supporting and strengthening the daycare centers.
Dr. Fasil Eshetu, AMU–IUC Project Manager, highlighted the project’s broader role in advancing research capacity, promoting gender equality, engaging the community, and supporting institutional development. He stressed that investments in staff support systems, including daycare services and ongoing professional training, are essential for enhancing staff wellbeing and institutional effectiveness.
Dr. Genaye Tsegaye, Sub-Project Leader, explained that this training was organized following a thorough assessment of the daycare centers, which identified skill gaps and service challenges, and that the training content was specifically designed to address these gaps. She emphasized the project’s role in establishing daycare centers at Abaya and Kulufo Campuses and conducting multiple rounds of caregiver training to ensure the quality, sustainability, and responsiveness of childcare services. She further called on the university to focus its ongoing support on directly addressing these identified challenges, which is crucial for the long-term sustainability of the centers.
Mrs. Bayush Tesfaye, Gender and Outreach Program Coordinator, underlined that accessible and well-functioning daycare centers are crucial for creating inclusive workplaces and enabling women staff to fully participate in their professional responsibilities. She encouraged trainees to provide safe, nurturing, and child-centered care.
Trainees highlighted that the training enhanced their confidence, strengthened practical caregiving skills, and clarified their roles and responsibilities, motivating them to apply the lessons learned in their daily work.
The training is expected to strengthen the competence of daycare personnel, improve the quality of daycare services, and ensure a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment for children across Arba Minch University
At the closing event, the project provided working uniforms and shoes to the caregivers and cleaners. This measure also addressed a key issue identified during the daycare assessment: hygiene challenges in daily care routines. By providing proper attire, the project supports staff in maintaining high hygiene standards while performing their duties effectively, ensuring a safer and cleaner environment for the children.
