Mr. Asegid Ketema, Director of the Sports Academy, highlighted the vital role of sports in enhancing both the physical and mental well-being of students. "Engaging in sports significantly contributes to the physical and psychological health of students, keeping them mentally active and enabling them to excel academically," he remarked. He emphasized that student, as representatives of the university, play a crucial role in enhancing its reputation while fostering interpersonal connections.
Mr. Asegid also pointed out that such events encourage a peaceful learning environment, facilitating social connections and opportunities for students to engage with the wider university community.
The friendly match, organized by the South Sudanese Students Union and the Somali Students Union, was seen as an excellent opportunity to cultivate goodwill, promote camaraderie, and engage in a competitive yet friendly sporting event. It also aimed to enhance physical fitness and foster unity among South Sudanese and Somali students.
The match provided a platform for students to strengthen their relationships beyond the classroom. Coach Gatkuoth Gai, a South Sudanese student from the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, shared, "Sports competitions are primarily about self-entertainment, peace, brotherhood, and solidarity. This event opens doors for students to connect and understand one another better." He expressed hope for more similar events in the future to further enhance unity within the university.
Echoing this sentiment, Team Leader and Coach Samaale Abdikariim, a Somali student from the Faculty of Water Supply and Environmental Engineering, stated, "This friendly football competition is a wonderful opportunity to reinforce our bonds of brotherhood." He underscored the importance of sports as a means to build relationships that extend beyond mere competition.
The excitement on the field was palpable as both teams displayed their skills and determination. The South Sudanese team triumphed with a score of 3-1, with goals scored by Yohoma Sami, Messi David, and Kucha Masii for South Sudan, while Somalia's Ayob Jame netted a goal for his team.
The match drew a supportive crowd of students from both South Sudan and Somalia, along with members of the university's sports academy. Their presence highlighted the event's significance in fostering unity and interaction among students from diverse backgrounds.
