Arba Minch University (AMU) recently gathered staff for an insightful two-day Grant Proposal Writing Workshop in partnership with North Carolina Applied & Technology State University /NCA&TU/, USA. The workshop was aimed to enhance the grant proposal writing skills of academic and research staff and graduate students. Click here to see more photos.

Solomon Bililign (Full Professor of Physics), a distinguished physicist from NCA&TU, shared his expertise from his over 30 years of experience in research on the challenges and strategies critical for successful grant proposal writing and applications. He noted the competitive nature of securing funds revealing that only 21 of his 150 - 200 grant proposals applications were funded. "Consistency is the key," he advised the participants urging them to maintain resilience in the face of setbacks.

Stressing on the importance of persistence in the grant proposal writing and application process, Prof. Solomon said, it would be quite helpful particularly in emerging fields where researchers may have limited track records. The necessity of strategic communication with funding agencies to navigate these challenges effectively is also another important factor in the process, he remarked.

Thomas Torora (PhD), Grants and Collaborative Project Management Directorate Director, further elaborated on topics such as scientific writing, building research collaborations, and preparing budgets for proposals. He also encouraged the participants to select funding opportunities, read solicitations, and prepare short proposals for review.

Key topics addressed during the workshop involved the essentials of effective proposal writing, comprehensive literature reviews, in-depth searching techniques, and budget justification strategies. He underscored the significance of understanding donor expectations and crafting persuasive proposals to obtain funding. The workshop included interactive peer review sessions, allowing participants to collaborate and present their own research proposals, applying the concepts discussed and receiving constructive feedback.

As the workshop concluded, participants were invited to stay connected for ongoing support in their grant writing efforts. Over 80 attendees participated, focusing on practical strategies for creating compelling proposals. Certificates were awarded to those who successfully engaged in presentations and peer reviews.

This initiative represents a significant step for AMU in cultivating a culture of research and collaboration, equipping its academic community with the tools needed to navigate the complexities of grant writing and funding acquisition. The collaborative effort between AMU and NCA&TU underscores the university's dedication to strengthening its research capacity and contributing to impactful research in Ethiopia.
