Arba Minch University (AMU) Department of Biology in collaboration with the University of Bergen, Norway, organized South Ethiopia Network of Universities in Public Health (NORHED-SENUPH II) holds a three-day scientific conference  on examination of research progress of PhD and MSc students supported by the project from November 13-15/2024, in AMU, Abaya Campus. Vice President for Academic Affairs, Alemayehu Chufamo (PhD), in his opening speech, noted that AMU as one of the public research universities is committed to contribute its share in the nation's building and development. He added that such collaborative initiatives benefit all parties in staff capacity-building and experience sharing. He expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Fekadu Massebo (PhD) for his unreserved contribution to realize the project's second phase and Bernt Lindtjørn (Full Professor) for his relentless effort and experience sharing.

Bernt Lindtjørn (Full Professor), Project Coordinator from University of Bergen, Norway, and the supervisor and researcher, said, the aim of this program is to build capacity in public health in Ethiopia. He added it’s important to strengthen research capacity at local institutions by establishing research teams and evaluating the progress of the project to improve South Ethiopian public health problems. Speaking at the conference he further explained the South Ethiopia Network of Universities in Public Health (SENUPH) is funded through the Norwegian Program for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development and aims to enhance the capacity of universities in south Ethiopia to train sufficient staff for the region to carry out essential public health work, and do essential research to improve the health of the people living in South Ethiopia

Fekadu Massebo (PhD), Project Coordinator for AMU, stated that the general objective of this scientific conference is to strengthen the supervisorial skill and human resource capacity at southern Ethiopian universities (AMU & HU) to improve the public health. He added that this scientific conference is carried out here at AMU to hear the progress of PhD and MSc students who involved in NORHED-SENUPH II. He also explained the benefit of the program for health professionals and people included in the project. Speaking at the conference, he said, we are trying to produce some evidences that might use the evidences for the action that benefit the program and the students share experiences among each other. Fekadu Massebo (PhD) and his team presented 8 papers regarding malaria research in Arba Minch and surrounding areas.

Taye Gari (PhD), the NORHED-SENUPH II coordinator for Hawassa University (HU) ,said we have PhD students and staff working on the research aimed to solve public health problems and supported by NORHED-SENUPH II project. The staff members and the students are here to present their research findings simply to learn from each other and to communicate their findings to audience. The presented papers focused on community health problems, he noted. The project findings are helpful for health policy makers at regional and national level; Taye Gari (PhD) and his team presented 14 papers regarding malaria, non communicable diseases, nutrition, reproductive health and climate, nutrition and health, he remarked. 

Interested staff from AMU biology department, PhD and MSc students from different universities supported by NORHED-SENUPH II Project, Staff members from HU, and officials from AMU and regional health bureaus were in attendance.
