AMU hosted insightful Public Lectures on biomass burning & its impact on climate change and air quality and crafting a successful grant proposal on November 14, 2024 in AMU, Main Campus. Click here to see more photos.
Thomas Torora (PhD), underscoring the importance of such initiatives in enhancing awareness of climate-related issues and crafting a successful grant proposal, emphasized the event’s alignment with AMU’s research priorities.
The first lecture presenter, Solomon Bililign (Full Professor of Physics) at Applied Sciences and Technology /A & T/ State University at North Carolina, USA, presented his research on “Characterizing the Optical and Chemical Properties of Biomass Burning Aerosols derived from African Biomass Fuels - Implications to Global Climate and Air Quality’. In his Lecture, Prof. Solomon highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive research on biomass burning aerosols focusing on their role in climate dynamics and public health. His presentation detailed laboratory studies examining how factors such as relative humidity, burn conditions, and fuel types affect biomass burning aerosol properties. He pointed out the significant gap in research on African biomass fuels compared to North American and western world sources calling for enhanced data collection and monitoring systems in Ethiopia.
The second presenter, Addisu Fekadu (PhD and associate professor of Biology) from AMU, discussed his point on 'Crafting Winning Proposals and Enhancing Networking Skills". He shared practical tips for researchers on securing grants and building partnerships drawing on his own experience in the field.
Following the presentations, the participants of the two lectures expressed their concerns about and posed queries on each topic ideas; thus, they noted the lack of data and technology for monitoring emissions from biomass burning regarding the first lecture. The also mentioned need for key policy introductions, improving data collection and monitoring systems, developing robust regulatory frameworks, promoting public awareness campaigns focused on the health impacts of air pollution and the need for collaboration between researchers and local communities. As for the second lecture, the participants confirmed that the lesson learned from Dr. Addisu's presentation will undoubtedly resonate and inspire a new generation of scholars to pursue innovative projects with confidence.
Vice President for Research and Collaboration Office, Behailu Merdekios (Associate Professor), closing the public lectures virtually expressed AMU's dedication to organize events that not only promote academic involvement but also establish the university as a leader in tackling crucial environmental problems in Ethiopia and beyond. This determination in developing practical strategies signifies a hopeful trajectory toward a greener and more sustainable future where research and community initiatives align to effectively fight climate change. He also extended his gratitude to the initiators, organizers, and presenters emphasizing on their efforts.
