Arba Minch University (AMU) hosted its 13th Annual Research and Publication Review Workshop, a two-day event held from February 6–7, 2026, at the Main Campus, during which key findings from 128 completed and 53 ongoing research projects were presented and constructive feedbacks from stakeholders were gathered. Opening the event and welcoming participants, Dr. Teklu Wegayehu, Vice President for Research and Cooperation, said that research is a dynamic and evolving process requiring continuous evaluation of practices, methodologies, and outcomes. He noted that the workshop aims not only to present individual findings but also to provide a platform for constructive feedback and dialogue, enabling participants to identify strengths, address challenges, and foster innovative approaches that enhance the quality and impact of research. Dr. Teklu emphasized the importance of publications as a key research target, highlighting the need to review outputs in terms of quantity, quality, including citations and patents, and retractions.
He also underscored policy briefs as critical tools for informing policymakers on urgent issues. AMU, he further added, strives to cultivate an environment that promotes curiosity, creativity, rigorous inquiry, and impactful scholarship, supported by recent government reforms to strengthen laboratories, research infrastructure, peer review, ethical standards, digitalization, home-based journals, multidisciplinary research, postgraduate programs, commercialization, knowledge transfer, and industry linkages, while encouraging participants to share experiences, insights, and challenges to foster continuous improvement and innovation.
Director of Research Affairs, Dr. Tesfaye Habtemariam, highlighted the University’s ongoing efforts to address challenges, modernize research management systems, and enhance the effectiveness of Research Affairs. He noted that the objective of the 13th Annual Research and Publication Review Workshop is to evaluate completed projects and gather stakeholder feedback on ongoing ones, adding that four selected research papers will be presented in plenary sessions, while the remaining papers will be discussed in parallel sessions according to the program schedule.
Dr. Ashenafi Hailu, Director of Grant and Collaborative Management, remarked the successes and challenges of grant and project management at the University. Mr. Sintayehu Tadesse, Head of the Ethiopian Innovation and Technology Transfer Desk and National Focal Person for Technology and Innovation Support Sectors, shared his expertise on innovation, intellectual property rights, and the patent registration process with the participants.
The 13th Annual Research and Publication Review Workshop at AMU brought together researchers and postgraduate students to evaluate and discuss ongoing and completed research projects. During the two-day event, 128 completed and 53 ongoing projects were reviewed through plenary presentations and parallel sessions, allowing participants to share findings, receive feedback, and engage in constructive dialogue. Key workshop themes included research evaluation, publications, policy briefs, grant and project management, and innovation and intellectual property, with speakers emphasizing quality, impact, and alignment with national priorities. The workshop also highlighted AMU’s efforts to strengthen research capacity, foster collaboration, promote multidisciplinary approaches, and translate scientific findings into practical solutions.
