AMU’s Collaborative Research & Training Center for Neglected Tropical Disease (CRTC-NTD) came into being in the year 2015. It’s the only renowned institution in Ethiopia, which is looking into NTDs scenario by conducting research and ensuring quality data to address evident gaps for decision and policy-making. It also offers trainings on prioritized areas, consultancy services and touches innumerable lives through community services.

NTDs scenario: NTDs are a group of chronic parasitic diseases that represent the most common illnesses of 2•7 billion indigent people globally, of which over 1 billion, 7th of world’s population suffer from one or more NTDs. And despite substantial burden NTDs have largely been ignored in the global health permutation.

More than half of the global burden of NTDs is believed to be in Africa, where Ethiopia is the second most affected nation. Today, NTDs continue to debilitate, deform, blind and kill sizeable proportions in Ethiopia as well as in catchment areas that can be witnessed in nearby (Ocholo) community in Arba Minch Zuriya district of Southern Ethiopia.

Furthermore, data on burden and their distribution is incomplete, impact assessments are not usually done and as there are very few research outputs available. Neither there is any research and training center that can bridge the gap in this regard, hence, the need for the establishment of CRTC-NTD in Arba Minch University in 2015.

Since beginning it had remarkable achievement both at local and national level for it has been independently monitoring the process of Mass Drug Administration throughout all regions and city administrations in Ethiopia.
