About the symposium

Enset-based agriculture is an indigenous sustainable farming system in Ethiopia that feeds over 20 million people. Enset is a climate-resilient crop in this ever-changing climate and provides enormous ecosystem services. In Arba Minch University (AMU), one of the research Universities in Ethiopia, enset-based research has been one of the main focuses. Initiated by the Biodiversity and Conservation Research Center of the university, further collaborative research has come up with capacity building and innovative technologies that have impacted the lives of millions of people. AMU aspires to organize an international symposium on enset to speak out and demonstrate its proven innovative Enset processing technologies and value-added and fortified food products to the national and international research, academia, businessmen, GOs, and NGOs. Our aim is to distribute responsibilities for the promotion and scaling up of the underutilized indigenous enset-based knowledge and technologies to the global community and then contribute to the attainment of some of the important SDGs. The symposium takes place for two days in which renowned enset-based researchers from Ethiopia and beyond will lead a panel discussion on how to make enset the next superfood. On the 2nd day, exhibitions and field visits on innovations will be held.  Arba Minch University, the Ministry of Agriculture of Ethiopia and the Bio and Emerging Technology Institute are co-hosting the event.
