AMU has set a unique precedent by organizing its first ever annual research review workshop beginning from 17^th to 19^th November, 2016, at Main Campus; it further continued at different institute and colleges at their respective campuses for the remaining two days.

Lauding Research Directorate for setting a unique trend, Vice President for Research and Community Service, Dr Guchie Gulie, said such workshop will help to evaluate proposals and to know what is achieved. It’s an excellent opportunity for researchers to take cue from here and enrich their understanding and approach to further create quality research.

He adds, we must analyze ongoing projects’ progress, know outcome of completed ones and imbibe fresh ideas to formulate new projects. Make it a point that every projects needs to be in line with project framework of AMU that ultimately benefit the community.

College of Agricultural Sciences’ researchers are involved in the vortex of research activities be it horticulture, plant science or agro-forestry, to obtain conclusive outcomes that will help society at large in stimulating crops yield, enhancing quality and redefining annual financial returns.

In an in-depth interview, Dean, Dr Nejib Mohammad, unraveling college’s collaborations at different levels, said, ‘‘Our college is engrossed in few research activities that are half-way mark, but as they advance further, we are expecting remarkable outcomes to emerge.’’

The first ever three-year project on ‘moringa’ signed in September 2015, with Ethiopian Environmental & Forest Research Institute and Ethiopian Public Health Institute is verifying its much-talked about clinical efficacy, profitability and environmental variables like soil fertility and carbon sequestration, etc. will re-establish its multi-utility and bust myths surrounding it.

Registrar office, the underpinnings of any educational institution shoulders huge responsibilities. And one heading it, will always be in the thick of things managing enrolment, securing records, counseling students & staff, enforcing regulations and arbitrating grievances, the list is endless.

Dr Belete Yilma, Registrar, discussing wide range of issues, informed as to how his team is well organized to handle increasing responsibilities this year in a free-wheeling interview.

On present scenario, he said, ‘‘This year enrolment stands at around 30,000 as Ministry of Education has assigned over 6000 new students in different streams as university will have 12 PhDs and more PG programs in different disciplines.’’

Relating interesting trend, he said that over 1500 new entrants literally scrambled to opt accounting compared to 500 of last year and equal numbers have selected continuing and distance mode following the cut point in regular going up. Accounting is attracting students as it has high job potential from across different sectors, he adds.

Arba Minch University will celebrate 11th Ethiopian Nations, Nationalities and People’s Day with zeal and great enthusiasmon 5^th December, 2016, at Main Campus, under the theme, ‘Our Constitution for democracy, unity and renaissance.’

In this regard university management has constituted a committee under the leadership of President, Dr Damtew Darza and vice presidents that has assigned different tasks to be carried out by different eight sub-committees so that this national event is successfully organized.
