Campus Guide

The University is sited in five campuses based around Arba Minch town, with the Arba Minch Institute of Technology, and primary administrative units based on the Main Campus site, and the Colleges sited according to infrastructure and facilities, number of students, and proximity to field and institutional attachment and laboratories. The College of Medicine and Health Sciences, for example, is sited nearby Arba Minch Hospital.

Main Campus

  • Arba Minch Institute of Technology

The 'Mother Campus' is located at about 5km north of Arba Minch town on the road to Addis Ababa.

Abaya Campus

  • College of Natural Sciences

Located in Secha Kifle Ketema of Arba Minch town overseeing Lakes Abaya to the left and Chamo to the right.

Chamo Campus

  • College of Business and Economics
  • College of Social Sciences and Humanities

Located at the southern end of Arba Minch in Secha Kifle Ketema overseeing Lake Chamo.

Nech Sar Campus

  • College of Medicine and Health Sciences

Located on the main road from Sikela to Secha, close to Arba Minch Hospital.

Kulfo Campus

  • College of Agriculture

Located on the main road from Main campus to Sikela, close to Kulfo River.

Vision

Arba Minch University aspires to be a leading university in Ethiopia, a centre of excellence in the field of water resources in Africa and competitive in the world by 2020.

Mission

Arba Minch University has a mission of offering relevant and quality education and training; conducting demand driven research and rendering accessible community services.

Goals and Objectives

The University shall have the following goals and objectives:

Goals

  • Ensure the quality and expansion of education and training
  • Advance research and consultancy works in various fields
  • Improve services to the community
  • Develop a conducive environment for learning and teaching
  • Increase the revenue, minimize the costs

Objectives

  • Prepare knowledgeable, skilled, and attitudinally mature graduates in numbers with demand-based proportional balance of fields and disciplines so that the country shall become internationally competitive
  • Promote and enhance research focusing on technology transfer consistent with the country's priority needs
  • Expand higher education services that are free from any discrimination on grounds of race, religion, sex, politics and other similar grounds
  • Ensure that education and research promote freedom of expression based on reason and rational discourse
  • Design and provide community and consultancy services that shall cater to the developmental needs of the country
  • Ensure institutional autonomy with accountability
  • Ensure the participation of key stakeholders in the governance of institutions
  • Ensure the participation of all those concerned bodies in administration decision making, create and promote participation culture
  • Promote and uphold justice, fairness, and rule of law in institutional life
  • Promote democratic culture and uphold multicultural community life

 

Call for Papers: 2nd Symposium on Biodiversity and Nature Conservation

The 2nd Symposium on "Biodiversity and Nature Conservation" will be held at Arba Minch University from June 3-4, 2011. The symposium is organized by Arba Minch University and co-organized by Horn of Africa Regional Environmental Centre and Network (HOA-REC).

Inauguration of New Campuses

The predecessor of the present AMU was the former Arba Minch Water Technology Institute, which was established in 1986 with the objective of producing trained professionals in the field of water resources. After its transformation to Arba Minch University, since June 2004, it is undergoing into a radical transformation having a vision to be one of the best universities in the country and a center of Excellence in the water sector in Eastern Africa.

11th Symposium on Sustainable Water Resource Development

Arba Minch University (AMU), with other partners, has successfully organized the 11th symposium on “Sustainable Water Resources Development” during December 3-4, 2010.  The symposium was co-organized by German IHP/HWRP, International Water Management Institute (IWMI), and Save the Children (WASH).
